Children photography is always a source of pride for both the photographer and parent. Some say photographing children is a tough job. This is true for both the amateurs and the professional children’s photographers. Children sometimes do not follow instructions. They easily get distracted. They do not like to remain in a certain pose, and at times create havoc. Whether you shoot them in a studio setting or outside, sometimes kids just do not want to cooperate. So how can you develop better photo skills when photographing children?
If you shoot with a digital camera, one way is to show the child what you just captured. It’s a way of getting them involved. Sure enough once they see what you are trying to do they may become more attentive to your directives. Keep the photo session light. Keep it fun. Once they gain your trust then it is time to be more assertive in what you want them to do. Again once you do, show them the results on the camera. If its action, playful shots you’re looking to get, let them play. Talk to them. Joke with them and once they relax and let down their guard, be ready to shoot.
If you are looking for a quiet moment from them, now it would be a good time to slow them down a bit. Again show them what you have in mind. They see themselves different now. And more than likely you can get them to stay focused in this state for awhile. One learning skill of children photography is to have loads of patience. Learn that kids have their own pace. Therefore, there may be times when you have to wait longer to begin than you may want to. Put the camera aside and respect want they want. This way, they themselves can relax which allow them need to them to focus solely on you and your lens.
Sometimes it helps to get help from those who know the kid the best — mom and dad! Parents will never fail to give a soothing embrace. Kids may need them to stay relaxed and at ease during the photo session. Allow mommy to join the shots. Why not? Even if it wasn’t intended, it will only add to the overall shoot. Once the kid sees that mommy is enjoying herself, the child most likely will enjoy himself more too. If you do this, you”ll earn dividends— you gained the kid’s attention and saved your neck from dealing with a uncooperative child.
Take plenty of photos. Give special attention to their emotions, expressions, and the relationship they have together. Taking pictures like this is like telling a story with your photos. Always hunt for giggles, laughter, and even cries. Have fun with your shots and enjoy every moment with the kid. Do not stress yourself too much. Kids are sensitive creatures, they might feel tension if you lose your cool. Be patient. Be patient. Be patient. Go into a children photography session with the right attitude and you’ll find yourself taking better pictures.
